Accreditation & Standards
All intern posts are assessed and accredited by the Accreditation subcommittee
of the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria. Internship offers medical graduates
the opportunity to consolidate the theoretical knowledge gained as a student
and apply it in caring for patients. It is an opportunity to learn in a relatively
protected environment, combining both service and training roles.
In Victoria an intern year consists of:
- the completion of at least 48 weeks of satisfactory, supervised clinical
experience;
- a core term of at least ten weeks in medicine;
- a core term of at least ten weeks in surgery; and
- a core term of at least eight weeks in emergency medicine.
Other (non-core) rotations make up the balance of the intern year and provide
opportunities to explore additional areas of medicine and surgery, anaesthesia,
psychiatry, paediatrics and less acute care such as rehabilitation medicine,
palliative care and geriatrics.
During the intern year, at least one rotation in a rural setting is expected.
Rural rotations provide experience in a different institutional setting less
oriented towards complex disease presentation and formal teaching. As an intern
in a rural hospital there is opportunity to encounter a broad range of people
and illnesses and your professional contribution will be particularly valued.
