Teaching on the Run

Introduction

Teaching on the Run (TOTR) is a national program developed by staff of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Australia. The TOTR program comprises six modules aimed at helping clinicians teach and supervise better including: Clinical teaching; Teaching skills; Assessment and appraisal; Junior doctor in difficulty; Planning term learning; and Effective group teaching.

Teaching on the Run in Victoria

In response to the expressed needs of junior doctors to acquire knowledge and skills about teaching (Assessment of Learning Needs in Postgraduate Medical Trainees: A Learning Needs Analysis, PMCV 2005; National Junior Medical Officer Forum, 2005), PMCV is conducting a Victorian Teaching on the Run project from June 2006 until June 2007, that involves the delivery of two train-the-trainer programs to clinicians and others who are involved in the education and supervision of (prevocational) junior medical officers (JMOs). Victorian TOTR trainers are then responsible for incorporating TOTR modules into the professional development program for PGY2 doctors at their hospital. To monitor the development and progress of the project, trainers submit details about the training they provide and JMO attendance at training sessions. Information is also collected from JMOs who attend TOTR education sessions, specifically about what they hope to achieve from the experience, how they plan to use the TOTR training in the workplace, and finally, at the conclusion of the program, what actual outcomes were achieved.
