IMG & Scope of Practice
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) form a significant proportion of the prevocational trainee hospital workforce in Victoria. This has been recognised by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV), with the establishment of an IMG Subcommittee as one of its core committees to oversee the workforce and training needs of IMGs practising medicine in Victorian hospitals. The PMCV, with funding from the Department of Health (DH) has developed a number of initiatives to support recruitment, orientation, supervision, assessment and early integration of IMGs.
The IMG section of this website has been designed to provide information and support for doctors who are interested in working, or are currently working in Victoria and who have obtained their primary medical qualification outside of Australia. It is also intended to assist Victorian public hospital staff involved in IMG supervision and supporting roles, for example: Medical Clinical Educators (MCEs); Medical Education Officers (MEOs); Directors of Clinical Training (DCTs); and other clinical supervisors.
The PMCV does not have any role to play with regard to facilitating the entry of medical practitioners to Australia (permanent or temporary) or obtaining registration to practise medicine. Information relating to immigration (residency and visas), medical qualifications and registration can be found via:
