AMC Orientation Guidelines
Following the COAG decision in 2006 to establish a nationally consistent assessment of international medical graduates (IMGs), the Australian Medical Council (AMC) in their AMC Orientation Guidelines, stated that it is the responsibility of the employer to provide, or source, a suitable orientation program and that the content of the orientation program should include:
- Orientation to the Australian healthcare system
- Communication and cultural safety
- Orientation to the local jurisdiction; and its health services and facilities
- Legislation and professional practice
All hospital/practice employers are required to confirm with the relevant Medical Board that all IMGs have undertaken orientation that addresses the defined content within 3 months of registration and employment.
