JMO Forum

JMO Forum Chair: Dr Henry Yao and Deputy Chair: Dr Meghan Cooney
The Council supports meetings of the JMO Forum. The purpose of the JMO Forum is to provide an opportunity for junior medical officers to meet with their peers and for the transmission of ideas on issues concerning JMO training, education and workforce to the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria for appropriate referral and discussion with other groups. The Forum is co-chaired by JMOs and meets at least 4 times a year.
The aims of the Education portfolio include advocating for all prevocational doctors to have access to protected teaching time and adequate orientation, as well as inherently developing to be both learners and teachers. We are currently working on ‘Recommendations for Best Practice Protected Teaching Time’ for distribution to stakeholders, and liaising with PMCV and AMA DiTs to expand accessibility to ‘Teaching on the Run’ in Victoria. In the future we hope to assist with the rollout of ‘Learning on the Run’. In a great collaborative effort with hospital Medical Education Units our hospital representatives have commenced the state-wide rollout of ‘Rolling HandOVER (ROVER)’ to improve rotation orientation. The Forum also advocated for increased recognition of clinical supervisors/educators and was delighted with the introduction of a new state and national ‘Clinical Educator Award’ this year.
Our Welfare portfolio focuses on improving factors which can negatively impact on JMOs’ wellbeing. A new ‘Paging Protocol’ is being piloted at a Victorian Health Service in an attempt to reduce the stress of inappropriate paging on time-poor JMOs. We are currently collaborating with AMA DiTs to produce ‘Recommendations for Intern Mentoring Programs’ as well as with ANZJMOC to explore the development of a ‘National JMO Wellbeing Study’.
The objectives of the Accreditation portfolio are to advocate for high accreditation standards of all prevocational positions and increase the involvement of JMOs in this process by promoting participation in JMO Surveyor/Accreditation Training.
Our Workforce portfolio represents JMOs’ interests on the PMCV workforce subcommittee and advocates for flexible workforce solutions which do not compromise appropriate supervision.
Please see entries from each portfolio for more details on their activities.
A proposal to create the JMO Forum as a formal subcommittee of Council has been approved by the PMCV Board with Terms of Rererence under development during 2011.
The JMO Forum is delighted to have opportunities to provide input regarding decisions which affect the education, training and welfare of JMOs. So, if you do not like to just stand by and watch things happen without having your say – join us!
