JMO - International Medical Graduates (IMG)

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are often exposed to substantial stressors - both physical and mental - when arriving in any new country and having to practice Medicine in an unfamiliar cultural and industrial context. As junior medical officers of the JMO Forum, we aim to increase the awareness of the support systems in place for IMGs and to augment their understanding of the Australian medical system. This is even more imperative after the recent implementation of the national Australian Medical Board in July 2010.
The PMCV and the Australian Medical Board arrange a variety of events to orient new medical practitioners to the Australian Health System. Current initiatives include:
- International Medical Graduates CV and Interview Preparation Workshop;
- Medical Careers Expo;
- Hitting the Ground Running Program: an orientation program for IMGs (previously conducted by the Medical Board of Victoria);
- Multiple bridging courses to prepare for medical licensing exams in Australia.
Future PMCV projects for 2010-2011 include implementation/review of:
- Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI) Accreditation Process
- Review of the Competent Authority pathway of the AMC
- Centralised Orientation Programs
- Supervision project for IMGs
- Supporting IMGs to progress to general registration.
