Research & Projects

The Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria is currently or recently completed a number of State and National projects which include the following:

  • Clinical Skills Education: Requirements of the Health Professions
This Project was commissioned by the Department of Human Services, Victoria. The Reference Group is chaired by Associate Professor Brendan Crotty, who is the current Chair of the PMCV Education subcommittee and is supported by Ms Joan Benjamin. The aims of the project are to:

    • To investigate the core clinical skills required by Victorian health professionals.
    • To establish the potential contribution that simulation based educational facilities* can make to the attainment, state wide, of the necessary core clinical skills.

*For the purposes of this project, a clinical skills educational resource/facility is defined as a synthetic environment that replicates a specific procedure or clinical context, without direct involvement of patients. Although some simulation-based resources may involve complex robotics, and computerised simulation centres and skills laboratories they can also include role-play, use of video and simple anatomical models.

A copy of the final report can be viewed at: http://www.dhs.vic.gov.au/pdpd/workforce/downloads/clinical_skills.pdf

  • National Guidelines for Junior Medical Officer Training and Assessment

In 2001 a national advisory committee, with broad representation, was set up under the auspices of Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils (CPMEC) to review and update the national guidelines for the training and assessment of junior doctors in their intern year (PGY1) and to develop general principles in relation to the second postgraduate year (PGY2). The resulting national guidelines are not intended to replace state-based programs or standards but are intended to provide general principles which may be considered to achieve the broad aims and objectives of the prevocational years.

The national guidelines are available electronically at the following website:
    http://www.cpmec.org.au/prevocationaltraining/accreditation/National-Assess-Guidelines.pdf

The National Advisory Committee was chaired by Professor Barry McGrath, Chairman of the PMCV Committee.
