The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) is Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to cancer and one of an elite group of hospitals worldwide to have its own integrated cancer research program and laboratories.

The Cancer Surgery Department is a growing, academically based group of surgeons delivering surgical care to cancer patients.  Surgeons carry out their work in a multi-disciplinary environment within a sub-specialty service dedicated to the management of melanoma, complex skin tumours, sarcoma, breast and head & neck reconstruction.

 

Surgical caseload includes the treatment of high-risk skin cancer, melanoma and reconstructive surgery for Breast, Head & Neck, Sarcoma and Colorectal cancers.  The full spectrum of plastic surgical techniques are utilised in a multidisciplinary setting.


The role is supported by a Plastic Surgery Fellow, an Accredited Plastic Surgery Registrar, a senior Hospital Medical Officer, junior shared hospital medical officer, Skin & Melanoma Service Secretary and works collaboratively with the Service Nurse Coordinators.  Daily workload involves operating, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary meetings, surgical audit and participation in the activities of the Division of Cancer Surgery including access to research opportunities.Previous experience in plastic surgery is mandatory.

The hospital from June 2016 is partnered with the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospitals in Melbourne. This allows the co-location of many of the services related to upper gastrointestinal and hepato-biliary patients. The new building is also shared with the University of Melbourne with additional research links to the many research Institute's in Parkville.

The position is for 12 months for people having obtained their FRACS or equivalent and involves working with the Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgeons in a high volume cancer hospital that specialises in laparoscopic tumour management. The position gives extensive exposure to oesophago-gastric, liver and pancreatic tumours as well as thoracoscopic surgery. Additionally, the unit specialises in many rare tumours and has an extensive expertise in neuroendocrine tumours, GIST and sarcomas. The unit is also involved with cancer surveillance plus interventional endoscopic procedures.

There are extensive research opportunities within the Division of Cancer Surgery as well as research laboratories at our centre. There is also the possibility for private assisting.

The position involves working with a dedicated multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists in a tertiary referral cancer centre. The successful applicant is involved in the diagnosis, work up, surgery and post-operative care of cancers. It also involves the care of non-operative and palliative patients. The trainee is expected to be involved with managing the unit, outpatients, teaching, research and being involved in the on-call roster.

The Division of Cancer Surgery is an academically focused group of surgeons delivering surgical care to cancer patients.  Surgeons work within a multi-disciplinary environment liaising closely with colleagues in medical oncology and radiation oncology. The surgical oncology fellow will be specifically involved in the care of patients with melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma.

There are extensive research opportunities within the Division of Cancer Surgery as well as research laboratories at our centre. There is also the possibility for private assisting.
