FAQs

FAQs will be added throughout the Match process

Q. When will I receive my candidate ID?
A. You will receive your unique candidate ID once you commence your Match application.

Q. Should I register my PMCV account using my university email or a personal email address?
A. A personal email address is recommended to ensure ongoing access after graduation.

Q. The application period is open for a month. When should I start my application?
A. PMCV recommends that you begin your application as soon as possible. It is important to nominate your referees early within the application period to allow them sufficient time to complete their references before the deadline. Ensure that all required sections are completed before the application closing date.

Q. When do I submit my application?
A. You can submit your application at any time before the application closing date.
The video interview process (for VRPA and VIA Group 4 candidates only) will occur after the application closing date and will only be open to candidates who meet the criteria to participate.

Q. Do I apply directly to health services?
A. If you are applying to the VRPA, you will be required to submit a direct cover letter to the health services you have preferenced. Each health service will have its own method for submitting applications. Candidates applying through the VIA are not required to submit a direct application to health services.

Q. I am applying to the VIA. Do I need to submit a CV?
A. Yes. Candidates are required to submit their CV through the PMCV portal. This information is used by health services for onboarding processes.

Q. I am applying to the VIA. Do I still need to nominate referees?
A. Yes. Candidates are required to nominate referees through the PMCV portal. Referee reports are used by health services as part of onboarding processes.

Q. Can I change my nominated referee?
A. Yes. However, if your referee has already completed the referee report and you change your referee, the completed report will be deleted and cannot be recovered.

Q. I have entered incorrect details for my referee. What can I do?
A. You can edit your referee details through your Match application in the PMCV portal.

Q. Will I be notified when my referees submit their reports?
A. Yes. You will receive confirmation through the Match portal once a referee report has been submitted.

A. Health Service contact details can be found in the Health Service Contact Directory on the Intern Match webpage.

Q. How do I access the application forms? Are they emailed to applicants?
A. Application forms are accessed through the PMCV Match portal on the PMCV website rather than being emailed directly to applicants.

Q. How should applicants contact PMCV to discuss extenuating circumstances?
A. Applicants can contact PMCV either by phone or email. However, email is generally preferred as it allows the team to review the details of the situation and provide appropriate guidance.

Q. What are Eligibility Groups?
A. In Victoria, intern positions are allocated via eligibility groups. You will be asked to select the eligibility criteria that applies to you in Step 3 of your Match application. The eligibility categories are used to determine the progression of offers. More information on eligibility groups can be found on the Intern Match webpage.

Q. I am an International Medical Graduate. Can I apply to the Intern Match?
A. No. International Medical Graduates are not eligible for internship in Victoria through the Victorian Intern Match.

Q. I am providing evidence that I completed Year 12 in Victoria. What evidence is accepted and does this documentation need to be certified?
A. Please provide a copy of your Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). This does not need to be certified. If you do not have a copy of your VCE, you can provide a letter from the Victorian high school you attended confirming that you completed Year 12 at that school. This letter must be on official letterhead and include contact details for verification purposes.

Q. Are Category 2 applicants guaranteed an internship position?
A. No. Only Category 1 applicants are guaranteed an intern position through the Victorian Intern Allocation. The number of positions available to other eligibility groups may vary each year.

Q. If my residency status changes from international to domestic during medical school, which category will I be considered under?
A. Please contact the PMCV if this change occurs and you will be advised based on your exact circumstances.

Q. Are permanent residents considered the same as Australian citizens in the match process?
A. Applicants should refer to the eligibility group definitions for further information on how residency status affects eligibility.

Q. Where can international students check English language requirements?
A. English language requirements are determined by the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Applicants should refer to the AHPRA website for the most current information on English language registration standards.

Q. Do I have to complete a video interview for the Match?
A. Only candidates applying through the VRPA or VIA Group 4 are required to complete a video interview.

Q. What questions will be asked in the video interview?
A. PMCV does not release the interview questions in advance. The questions will be situational or scenario-based.

Q. How many interview questions will applicants be required to answer?
A. All candidates will be required to answer three (3) questions. The interview questions are randomly selected from three different question banks so that applicants receive different situational or scenario-based questions.

Applicants applying to the VRPA will be required to answer an additional question.

Q. Are the interview questions timed?
A. Yes. Applicants will have one (1) minute to read the question and prepare their response, followed by two (2) minutes to record their answer.

It is recommended that applicants allow 20–30 minutes to complete the interview. This includes reading the instructions, testing audio and video settings, and completing the recording.

Q. Will I be assigned a time to complete my interview or can I do it at any time during the interview period?
A. Applicants can complete their video interview at any time during the specified interview period. However, it is recommended that you allow sufficient time to ensure your recording is completed and submitted before the deadline.

Q. How do I access the video interview link?
A. Once the video interview period opens, the video interview button will become active within your Match application.

Q. What should I do if I experience a technical problem during my video interview?
A. If you experience a technical issue during the video interview, you can contact allocations@pmcv.com.au for assistance.

Q. Who can I nominate as a referee?
A. You must nominate two clinical referees who are PGY4 level or above and have been directly involved in supervising your clinical practice. You should not nominate anyone who cannot comment on your clinical skills.

Q. Why is my application status still pending? When will my application be approved?
A. Application approval is not automatic upon submission.

The PMCV team reviews each application to ensure all required information has been provided and that applicants meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the Match. This includes checking MIPN numbers and confirming that the correct eligibility criteria have been selected.

Approval times may vary depending on the volume of applications and enquiries being processed. All applications will be reviewed and processed before the final application closing date.

Q. What is the minimum and maximum number of preferences I can nominate in the VRPA?
A. Applicants participating in the VRPA must nominate a minimum of four (4) and a maximum of eight (8) preferences. PMCV strongly recommends nominating as many preferences as possible to maximise your chances of allocation.

Q. What is the minimum and maximum number of preferences I can nominate in the VIA?
A. Candidates applying through the VIA must nominate all participating health services and intern training programs.

Q. Can health services see my preference order?
A. No. Health services cannot see your preference order.

Q. What happens if I receive an offer in another state or territory? Can I accept it and will this affect my chances of receiving an offer in Victoria?
A. You can accept an internship offer in another state or territory and still remain eligible to receive an offer in Victoria. If you receive multiple offers, you will need to decide which offer to accept and decline the other.

Please note that during the Late Vacancy Management process, participating candidates can only receive one internship offer in Australia.

Q. How do I accept my allocated position?
A. You must accept your allocated position through your PMCV login within 48 hours of receiving the offer.

Q. Can I decline my allocated position?
A. Yes, you can decline your allocated position. However, if you decline your offer, you will not receive any further offers of internship in Victoria.

Q. What does a conditional allocation mean?
A. All allocations through PMCV are conditional. Candidates who are allocated to a health service must meet the hiring and compliance requirements of the employing health service through their recruitment processes.

Q. How do I apply for the VRMS scholarship?
A. To apply for a VRMS scholarship, you must complete the VRMS section of the Intern Match registration form administered by PMCV. Applications open at 10:00am on Tuesday 5 May 2026 and close at 5:00pm on Thursday 4 June 2026.

Q. Do I need to provide evidence that I have worked in a rural community in Victoria?
A. Applicants are assessed based on the information provided in their VRMS application. Applications are evaluated based on previous rural living or work experience, connections to rural Victoria, and demonstrated commitment to a long-term career in rural Victoria, with preference for MM3 and above locations.

Q. Am I eligible if I preference metropolitan health services?
A. Applicants must opt in to the Victorian Rural Preferential Allocation (VRPA) as part of the Intern Match and commit to working in rural or regional Victoria for two years after graduation.

Q. Do I have to select only Rural Generalist Pathways to be eligible?
A. No. Rural Generalist internships are one type of internship available through the Victorian Rural Preferential Allocation (VRPA), but they are not the only option. You may also undertake an internship at another eligible rural or regional health service through the VRPA.

Q. Does the two year Return of Service obligation have to be completed consecutively?
A. Recipients must work in rural or regional Victoria for two years after graduation, and this must be completed within three years of graduating from medical school.

Q. I receive a RAMUS scholarship. Can I still apply?
A. You are not eligible if you receive other scholarships, cadetships or bursaries with a combined value of more than $7,000 per year. This limit does not include Centrelink payments or income from employment.

Q. What locations are considered rural for the VRMS?
A. Health services located in Modified Monash Model classifications MM2 to MM7 are considered rural. Barwon Health in Geelong is also considered rural for the purposes of the VRMS and VRPA.

Q. What happens if I do not complete the return of service requirement?
A. Recipients must comply with the conditions outlined in the VRMS Scholarship Agreement. Applicants are advised to seek independent legal and financial advice before accepting the scholarship, including advice on the consequences if the conditions are not met.

Q. Will my employer know that I received a VRMS scholarship?
A. Yes. PMCV monitors the return of service obligation, and scholarship recipients must accept employment with the health service to which they are matched or offered employment.

Q. Is the VRMS scholarship tax free?
A. Applicants are advised to seek independent financial advice regarding any tax implications associated with the VRMS scholarship.

Q. There is only one rural health service I want to nominate in my preference list. Should I enter the VRPA?
A. The VRPA is intended for applicants with a genuine interest in working in rural Victoria. PMCV generally recommends that applicants only participate in the VRPA if they are willing to preference two or more rural and/or VRGP health services.

If you only wish to preference one rural health service and the remainder of your preferences would be metropolitan health services, it may be more appropriate to participate in the Victorian Intern Allocation (VIA) instead.

Q. I wish to preference a mix of rural and metropolitan health services. Should I enter the VRPA?
A. No. If you participate in the VRPA, you can only preference rural or regional health services that are participating in the VRPA. Metropolitan health services cannot be included in your preference list.

Q. Who is eligible to apply for the VRPA?
A. The VRPA is only open to candidates who meet the criteria for VRPA Group 1, Group 2 or Group 3. The eligibility criteria for these groups are outlined on the Intern Match webpage.

Candidates who do not meet these criteria cannot participate in the VRPA. However, if they are eligible for the Intern Match they can still participate in the Victorian Intern Allocation (VIA) and may preference some rural or regional health services through that process.

Q. How many positions will be available in the VRPA?
A. The number of positions available through the VRPA cannot be confirmed until applications have closed.

Q. Are VRPA Group 1 candidates prioritised above VRPA Group 2 and Group 3 candidates?
A. Yes. VRPA Group 1 candidates are guaranteed an internship position and are therefore prioritised ahead of VRPA Group 2 and Group 3 candidates during the allocation process.
