The Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) is proudly celebrating its 25 year anniversary in 2025! To mark this incredible milestone, we will be reflecting on our expansive history since our founding in 1999 and highlighting our key achievements. Over the next few months, we will be taking the time to reflect on where we have been and where we are going. However, before we get to that, this blog will be taking a closer look at where we are now and where 2025 will take us.
There is a Postgraduate Medical Council (PMC) in every state and territory of Australia. As PMCV we represent all Victorian prevocational doctors, which are doctors that are completing their first two years of practice post-university in a Victorian public health or General Practice facilities.
Since it’s inception, PMCV has been funded by the Victorian Department of Health, fostering a strong and enduring partnership that continues to drive our shared commitment to excellence in healthcare.
PMCV strives to deliver exceptional training opportunities and environments for prevocational (PGY1 and PGY2) doctors throughout all health facilities in Victoria. We do this by working across the public healthcare system, both within Victoria and throughout Australia, to help improve the educational and training opportunities that are available to support the welfare and career development of prevocational doctors who have recently graduated or commenced work in Victoria.
Our reach is predominately in Victoria however, our ongoing work and initiatives are also being shared at a national and international level. This includes the development of the Prevocational Supervision Training package in collaboration with the AMC and other training initiatives to support the implementation of the AMC’s revised National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training.
PMCV’s 14 team members work across each of our core functions and collaborate frequently with various stakeholders, from public health organisations to prevocational doctors, in order to fulfil our vision and purpose.
The core functions of PMCV are as follows:
- Accreditation & Standards – We audit against the Australian Medical Council (AMC) standards to ensure that all prevocational doctors are being appropriately supervised to enable safe patient care.
- Advocacy & Wellbeing – We ensure that prevocational doctors have a voice in their health facility and an outlet for raising concerns through PMCV. We also deliver educational courses that focus on improving teaching skills and understanding of the Australian healthcare system.
- Workforce & Planning – We facilitate graduate doctor and College recruitment on behalf of employees by creating collaborative, transparent, and consistent approaches.
PMCV is governed by a Board, which has responsibility for managing the business and affairs of the organisation, as well as facilitating a number of committees and networks that feature a cross section of our stakeholders. You can learn more about PMCV’s Governance Structure on our ‘About Us’ webpage.
Collaboration with our stakeholders is essential for driving meaningful outcomes and ensuring the success of PMCV’s initiatives. The organisation would like to thank all stakeholders for their continued support and input.
We are excited to see what 2025 brings and we are thrilled to have you join us for this celebration of 25 Years of PMCV where we will look back on our rich history and what we have accomplished.
