Prevocational Supervision Training in the General Practice Setting

The Australian Medical Council’s (AMC) revised National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training (National Framework) states that all prevocational term supervisors must complete supervision training within three years of implementation.

To support prevocational supervisors in a hospital setting complying with the training requirements, PMCV developed under the guidance of the Australian Medical Council, the (PSTP) which was released in October 2023.

The AMC has indicated that in the future (likely in 2029), community terms in general practice (GP) settings will become a mandatory component of prevocational medical training. Following the release of the PSTP, PMCV was approached by one of our GP Surveyors, Dr Eldon Lyon, who enquired as to the PSTPs trainings relevance to GPs and how it would be accessed.

When considering this, a challenge was identified: the current training material may not be fit for purpose for GPs, as the National Framework is currently centred around training in hospital settings. PMCV aimed to address this significant gap by working with the GP community to develop training material that considers these differences.

At the 2023 ANZ National Prevocational Education Forum PMCV CEO, Julie Hatty, met with General Practice Supervision Australia CEO, Carla Taylor. Carla was enthusiastic about the approach for this project and proceeded to put PMCV in contact with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP) Dr Gerard Ingham and A/Professor Lawrie McArthur.

The new project team consisting of RACGP and PMCV determined that between the two organisations it would be possible to adapt the existing PSTP resources into a module for the GP community. As funding opportunities were limited to support for this project, the two organisations agreed to participate in kind.

As a result, PMCV and RACGP are collaborating to develop prevocational supervisor training material with appropriate language and content for the community setting.

The adapted training material will focus on the following learning objectives:

  1. An understanding of the National Framework and how the standards apply to the community setting.
  2. An understanding of how the prevocational supervisor role contributes to good quality training and patient safety in a community setting.
  3. An understanding of the responsibilities of a prevocational supervisor in the community setting: orientation, supervision, billing, and assessment.

The first training module will introduce supervisors to the core requirements to deliver the National Framework in prevocational GP terms. A subsequent module will provide information about completing the required assessments and will include:

Once this training material is completed it will be available through the RACGP Learning Management System and accessible to all GP prevocational supervisors across the Nation.

It is expected that all current and future GP facilities accredited for prevocational training will be required to complete this training to meet compliance requirements.

RACGP’s Dr Gerard Ingham, in collaboration with PMCV, will be facilitating a workshop on this training at the RACGP Annual GP Conference #GP24 entitled ‘Prevocational doctors in general practice’ on the 21st of November 2024. If you would like to attend, please head to the RACGP Website to register.
