Key Stakeholder Information for IMGs
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) form a significant proportion of the prevocational trainee hospital workforce in Victoria. This has been recognised by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV), with the establishment of an IMG Committee as one of its core committees to oversee the workforce and training needs of IMGs practising medicine in Victorian hospitals. The PMCV, with funding from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has developed a number of initiatives to support recruitment, orientation, supervision, assessment and early integration of IMGs.
The IMG section of this website has been designed to provide information and support for doctors who are interested in working, or are currently working in Victoria and who have obtained their primary medical qualification outside of Australia. It is also intended to assist Victorian public hospital staff involved in IMG supervision and supporting roles, for example: IMG principal supervisors; Medical Education Officers (MEOs); and other clinical supervisors.
Recruitment process
PMCV coordinates the HMO/Registrar Late Vacancy matches in September/October. These recruitment processes are open to IMGs who do not hold current registration with the Medical Board of Australia but meet all the requirements to gain registration in Australia for the next clinical year. The 2022 matching process, for positions to commence in 2023, has closed with no further rounds to be run. If you are seeking a position, you must contact the Health Services directly.

Most centralised recruitment (Match) processes the PMCV coordinates are only open to doctors who hold current general registration, or hold current provisional registration and are due to gain general registration by the start of the following clinical year.
Some Victorian health services employ IMGs directly, however PMCV cannot assist you in finding a position. You will need contact health services directly to enquire, or apply for positions for which you are eligible, via the websites of the individual health services concerned. Many health services have a mid-year recruitment intake for IMGs to commence in July/August.

Registration, medical qualifications and visa information
The PMCV does not have any role to play with regard to facilitating the entry of medical practitioners to Australia (permanent or temporary) or obtaining registration to practice medicine. No further applications under the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) program can be lodged, with the new TSS visa online forms available for use since 18 March 2018. IMG Employment Pathways – Overview
International medical graduates (IMGs) whose medical qualifications are from a medical school outside of Australia or New Zealand and who are seeking registration to practice medicine in Victoria must provide evidence of eligibility to undertake one of the following 3 assessment pathways.
IMG Orientation and Support
All hospital/practice employers are required to submit a work performance report, including the orientation report to the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) confirming that the defined orientation content has been addressed, within 3 months of registration and employment for IMGs new to practice in the Australian healthcare system.
PMCV Hitting the Ground Running (HTGR) – IMG Orientation Program
This program is open to International Medical Graduates employed or about to commence employment within the Australian health system (Hospital-based and General Practice) and covers the orientation content required for completion of the 3 month orientation report (ORIG 30) to the Medical Board of Australia (MBA).
